Doral Health and Wellness Celebrates the UN International Day of Older Persons
October 1st, 2020, is the International Day of the Older Persons (#UNDOP), a day dedicated to inform and raise awareness on aging, more specifically, how to #AgeWell. It is no secret that 2020 has been a challenging year due to #COVID19, affecting many worldwide, primarily our elderly, with populations worldwide rapidly aging, with some of the fastest changes occurring in low- and middle-income communities. At Doral Health & Wellness, we wanted to use this opportunity to promote the start of the #DecadeofHealthyAgeing (2020-2030) in the East New York Community. Also highlight the role of the health care workforce, focusing on women in the nursing profession who are often undervalued and, in most cases, under-compensated for their contributions to the health of the older persons.
Nurses are often unsung heroes of the health care system. At the same time, they can be found in settings ranging from physicians’ offices, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living, including our homes. The nurse can assist with Medication Management; research has shown that seniors, on average, take five or more different types of medication each day. They can help monitor your diabetes and high blood pressure, assisting with the readings, and providing medical information on a proper diet.
With the help of a Nurse, health problems associated with seniors, such as chronic conditions, significantly non-communicable diseases, can be prevented or delayed by engaging in healthy behaviors such as:
- Healthy Diet
- Exercising
- Not Smoking
- Adequate Sleep
- Avoiding Chronic Stress
- Maintaining a healthy weight
Secretly we all want to live forever. But since we have not discovered how, we hope these tips will help you increase longevity since it depends heavily on one key factor: Health.
Simply living a healthier lifestyle will add extra years to your life, and age where the experience is enjoyable. No one wants added years if it is accompanied by a decline in physical and mental capacity. Poor health does not need to dominate older age.
